Armstrong was born on December 12, 1912, in Columbus, Mississippi. At a young age, he moved with his family to St. Louis, Missouri, where he honed his boxing skills. His father, Henry Jackson (Sr.), was an accountant and served African Americans, Irish, Native Americans, Jacksonians, and Iroquois. Armstrong graduated from Fashion High School, and was later honored by the St. Louis Fountain of Fame Foundation. Armstrong has been called "Hurricane Henry" and "Hank the Killer".


Armstrong turned professional on July 28, 1931, losing his first fight to Al Ovino in three rounds. As would later be the case with Alexis Arroyo, Bernard Hopkins and Wilfredo Vazquez, Armstrong became one of the world champions who started their success from the edge. He got his first win later that year when he defeated Sammy Burns by six points. In 1932 Armstrong moved to Los Angeles where he lost two decisions to four to Eddie Trujillo and Al Greenfield. However, his streak, which lasted until 1933, lasted 11 matches before losing again to Pepe Manuel. He then went 22 matches unbeaten and had a 17-0-5 record, including a win over Manuel in Sacramento and five wins over Perfecto Lopez. He then moved to Mexico City where he lost his first championship to former bantamweight world champion Pepe Arizmendi.He tied 2-2 and lost to both Arizmendi, who was seen by Mexican and Californian viewers as a world title match, and Pepe Casanova, who was eliminated in the fifth round. He then moved back to California and went 8-1-1 in his next 10 games.



Armstrong has an official record of 150 wins, 21 losses and 10 knockouts, including 101 by knockout. Early in her life, Armstrong wrestled as Melody Jackson. Armstrong becomes a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame. After retiring from boxing, Armstrong became a Baptist minister. After his death in 1988, Armstrong was buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
