 Joseph Louis Barrow (May 13, 1914 - April 12, 1981), better known as Joe Louis, was an American professional boxer and world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949. Louis is considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Nicknamed the "Bronze Bomber", Lewis helped elevate his boxing rival infamous post-Jack Dempsey era, built himself at a time when the game dominated the sport, and built a reputation as an honest and hardworking boxer. This era lasted 140 consecutive months in which he participated in 26 league matches. It was the twenty-seventh fight against Hazard Charles for the heavyweight title and as such was not included in the fights Louis had during his reign. He was widely considered the first African-American to be a national hero in the United States, and he was also the center of activity in the anti-Nazi movement that paved the way for World War II.[4] And Louis was able to join the game of golf, thus breaking all barriers that prevent black athletes from participating in tournaments for this game in America after he received an exception from a sponsor in a match organized by the PGA (American Professional Golfers Association) in 1952.
