 Biography of Jet Li

One of the most popular Asian actors in Hollywood, known for his impressive martial arts skills (Wushu). Like other Chinese actors like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, he was able to make his mark in the entertainment industry in the United States of America. He acted in a good number of films, and was praised in some of them.

Back home, he's not only known for his acting roles, but for his martial arts skills. Lee began his career as a martial arts practitioner, winning the national championship at the age of 11. While he was touring around the world to introduce his martial talents, he came across a lucrative offer to work in films. Soon after, he starred in Chinese films before being discovered by Hollywood.

With his superb martial arts and excellent acting skills, he was able to make an instant impact on the American audience, and he achieved instant fame as his films were blockbusters. Not long after, he signed contracts with filmmakers to co-star with some of the famous actors in Hollywood, and his journey to stardom became easier and faster. Today, he is one of the few Chinese actors who hold a significant foothold in Hollywood, despite language barriers and cultural differences.




The beginnings of Jet Li

Li Lian Jie was the youngest of five brothers, his father died when he was only two years old. He was at the age of eight when his family discovered his talent in martial arts (Wushu) and sent him to a school to learn this art.

Soon after, he became part of the famous wushu team in Beijing, China, which was named Beijing Wushu Team and participated in the National Games of the People's Republic of China. At the age of 11, Lee won his first national championship. As a result, he has traveled to approximately 45 countries to showcase the sport. In 1974, he performed for US President Richard Nixon, and was awarded the title of National Wushu Champion that year .

Lee married actress Huang Kyunan in 1987, and they have two daughters, Si and Taimei. The couple divorced in 1990. He married again in 1999 to actress Nina Li Chi and also has two daughters from this marriage.

Jet Li retired from wushu at the age of 17 and made his debut in the Chinese film industry with the movie "Shaolin Temple" in 1982. The film was a success, and it established Jet Li as a promising actor in China. At the end of the 1980s, he moved to Hong Kong where he signed on to "Once Upon a Time in China" (1991), a martial arts film.

He made his Hollywood debut in the 1994 action movie Lethal Weapon 4, in which he played the bad guy alongside Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. In 2000, he collaborated with rapper DMX and singer Aaliyah on the hit "Romeo Must Die". The following year, he acted in “Kiss of the Dragon.” Critics' reviews of the film were positive. In the Chinese movie "Hero" in 2002, he played a warrior hero from the third century in China, and the movie was very successful and won many prestigious awards.


In 2003, he once again collaborated with DMX on “Cradle 2 the Grave”, a crime thriller, which unfortunately did not become a huge success. After a break of a year, he came back with the hit thriller 'Unleashed' in 2005, playing a very serious role, and this movie was also an economic success. It was followed by another movie, "Fearless," based on the true story of martial arts master Hu Yuanjia's near-death experience.

"The Forbidden ingdom", which fails miserably. However, after playing a ruthless Chinese emperor in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" Lee was able to please his fans once again. His latest film, The Expendables, was released in 2010, in which he starred alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham.

Among his most successful works was Romeo Must Die, in which he played the hero, Hang Sing. It earned revenues of $91,036,760 at the box office, and more than one million copies of the film's songs were sold by the end of the year. His next successful appearance was in the movie "Hero", which grossed $177,394,432. It also finished fourth among foreign films at the box office, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2003 Academy Awards.

He won the 2007 Hong Kong Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor for Fearless. Lee also won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor in 2008 for 'The Warlords'. In the same year, he won the Shanghai Film Critics Award as Best Actor for "The Warlords".
