Born to Jimmy Kirkpatrick and Lorna Smith Tyson in Brooklyn, New York, Mike was one of the couple's three children. He had an older brother named Rodney and a sister named Denise who died in 1991 due to a heart attack. He also had a half-brother named Jimmie Lee Kirkpatrick from Kirkpatrick's earlier marriage.

Kirkpatrick left the family after young Tyson was born. The family struggled financially, moving from Bedford-Stuyvesant to Brownsville when Tyson was ten years old.

Tyson has been involved in fights since his early years, and of course those fights were basically just for personal reasons and had no professional ground or serious orientations; He was constantly resorting to his fists to solve his problems.
